This was held at Legacy House on Sunday16th of November 2008, and turned out to be one our most popular events of the year, with 18 teams competing (around 70 kids). This included two teams from Gnowangerup, which was a mighty effort. There were so many Chessplayers there that we nearly ran out of sets and clocks. It was great to see the hall nearly full. The event was run as a 7 round swiss. With kids ranging from 7 to 17, this led to a few David v Goliath contests, and some upsets occurred: for example, Ciaran Fereday beat Chris Boni in Round 1.
Jack South and myself were the Tournament Directors but we had help from a number of people, including Chris Thurtell, Rudy Williams, Linda Carolin, Don Smith, Arthur Harvey, and others. Without this help, the event would have been difficult to manage.
In the end, The Independants repeated their A Grade success from last year, proving to be the most consistent overall, with six won matches and one draw. Seton again finished second – a 3-1 loss to The Independants in round 3 proved impossible to overcome. For a while, however, the Midland Knights looked like upsetting both of the top two seeds. They won their first 3 matches 4-0, then drew with The Independants, before stumbling to a 3-1 loss against the Check Mates (St Andrew’s & Christchurch). Actually, the Check Mates deserve a special mention as they only had 3 players yet they were still well in contention until a 0-4 loss to The Independants in the second last round.
By round 6, the Awesome Foursome managed to catch the Midland Knights in the battle for B Grade. As luck would have it, they played in the last round. However, the match was a draw and we had to use match points to split the two teams, the Awesome Foursome winning by virtue of having 4 wins and 2 draws, compared to 3 wins and 2 draws for Midland.
The second Seton team won C Grade with a little to spare but there was quite a struggle for second place, with the Manning Hall team getting there by a point.
