2009 Joondalup Junior GP Tournament

Played at Lake Joondalup Baptist College on the 25th of July

For the first time, we ventured into the northern suburbs to hold one of our Junior Grand Prix tournaments. The venue was the library of the Lake Joondalup Baptist College, which was organised for us by Stephen Sampson from the school. This was a very nice space, and we were able to use three separate areas, which meant that the Under 10s and Under 12s each had their own little world to play in. The school provided a nice afternoon tea for us. All in all, it was a pleasant experience.

There was a pleasing turnout of 56 players, helped in no small part by the efforts of Stephen Sampson and John Hampton who secured the entries of 17 LJBC students! If you look at the Grand Points scored by the schools for this round, they are dominated by the Lake Joondalup Baptist College. Most of these players were competing for the first time and they acquitted themselves quite well, in the circumstances.

Unusually, this time, we were able to have four tournaments. In each, there was a convincing winner: Chris Doukakis from Christ Church in the Under 18s, Lee Harris-Brown from Lake Joondalup Baptist College, Kieran Dullabh from Churchlands Primary School in the Under 14s, and Sean Vettoor from Applecross Primary School in the Under 10s. We have not seen Sean for some time, but he has lost none of his skills.

Everything ran very smoothly. We started on time (almost), finished early, and cleaned up with a minimum of fuss. It was hard to shake the feeling that we had forgotten something!

Dennis Holland and myself shared the DOP duties and we had the help of a number of others, as always.
