2009 WA Junior Lightning
This tournament was held over from 2009, so player’s ages were taken as at January 1st, 2009. This was a little bit confusing, but it did give some players a last chance at their old age group, including Verity Williams, who finished her Junior Chess career here.
Jack South and myself were the DOPs for this tournament, plus we had help from a number of others. Chris Blenkinsop, and some of the other ladies present, put on a sausage sizzle which was much appreciated. All Juniors played in the one tournament, despite their age. We decided to follow our usual practice and award divisional prizes strictly by age.
For some historical reason, not known to me, we only have two perpetual trophies for the Junior Lightning:
Under 12 Champion, and WA Junior Lightning Champion, and nothing for the girls. If someone out there wanted to donate a trophy, I am sure that it would be gratefully received. Because we had 18 prizes, and were only expecting about 20 entries, I decided not to buy any Merit Awards. However, we ended up with 30 entrants, which resulted in a 3-way tie for 3rd in the Under 12 division, plus a 6-way tie for 3rd in the Under 10 division – and it seemed unfair to give nothing to those who missed out just on countback, so we fell back on our normal emergency Merit Awards (5$ notes).
Ryan Sam had a very strong tournament, just conceding one draw to Chirag Saroha, and ended up winning the whole tournament, as well as his Under 12 division.
Verity Williams and Chris Boni both had excellent results, with Verity just winning the Under 18 battle.
Chirag Saroha perhaps did not do as well as he would have hoped, but still managed to win the Under 16 division, ahead of Chris Doukakis and Adam Tynas.
Darby Thurtell and Matthew Duke tied for 1st in the Under 14 division, with Darby having the higher countback. Both players look to be improving and should do well this year.
The Under 12 division was a runaway for Ryan Sam, who finished 3˝ points clear. However, George Carolin-Unkovich also had a good result, finishing =4th overall. Kieran Dullabh, Varun Mukhedkar and Andrew Savory also had solid results.
David Stebbins did well, winning the Under 10 division and finishing 8th overall. Hopefully, this might partly make up for the late finish of the tournament making him late for his Chinese New Year party. Indira Savory just missed out, finishing just a ˝ point behind David, and there was a traffic jam for 3rd, just behind her.
