This tournament was held over the Foundation Day weekend on the 6th & 7th of June at Legacy House in South Perth. This tournament was a Class 4 event in the Yulgilbar-Think Big Australian Chess Grand Prix, due to the sponsorship of Brian Jones of Australian Chess Enterprises. The turnout for this event was 14 players. It was also not so popular last year. June is shaping up as a bad month for Chess, with a number of our regular players being involved in exams, or exam preparation, and the weather not being too pleasant. However, it would be funny to hold the Foundation Day tournament in, say, May. As long as we get enough players to make it worthwhile, I expect we will continue with the event. Another aspect of the entry was the absence of our higher rated players, with no player rated over 1900. However, this was not so bad as it created a different feel from our usual tournament. Edik Gilmetdinov clearly won the tournament, drawing only with overseas visitor Walter Stassen, and defeating the three top rated players. This may represent a breakthrough result for Edik, though he also achieved a good result in the 2009 WA Open. David Ellis continued his good recent form. Walter Stassen was (too) solid in finishing third. He was undefeated, but four draws proved to be too many. Nedeljko Tomic made a solid result in winning the U1750 rating group. The U1600 rating group had only three players in it: Denis McMahon, Girma Orssengo and Wallace Sheridan. They all scored 50 percent, and they all shared the money. The Junior prize was a bit of a farce. In the end, Aston Taminsjah was the only Junior playing, and he duly won the prize! I thought Chris Doukakis was playing, just not in round one. His mother sent me an email on Saturday, informing me of his inability to play, but it did not arrive in time due to some computer glitch. So, in the end, we had 14 players, and 9 of them collected a prize. On some level, that can't be too bad. Report by Haydn Barber. |
