2010 Valentines Day Lightning
Our members, in previous years, have voted with their feet for more short tournaments. The Chess Association’s response has been to institute a “Rapid Grand Prix” and this tournament was the first in the series. Despite a relatively short notice, we received 26 entries, which is quite promising. Actually, the rush of late entries, while very nice, led to the tournament starting quite late.
The tournament was held alongside the 2009 WA Junior Lightning, at Legacy House. Jack South and myself were the DOPs. Eugene Konovalov headed a small committee who sorted out the rules. We seem to always do this so, this time, we will distribute Eugene’s proposed rules to interested parties, with the aim of formally adopting a set of CAWA Rules for Lightning Play.
After a loss to Michael Wilkins in round 4, Tristan Boyd was relentless – winning each of his last 7 games, to finish on 10 points from 11 rounds. Michael continued to play well after his win against Tristan, but a loss to Bozidar Mandic in Round 7 dropped him back to a share of the lead, and a loss to Yita Choong in Round 10 allowed Tristan to win the tournament. Bozidar also had a good finish to the tournament, scoring 5½ from his last 6 rounds. Both Michael and Bozidar scored 9 points, which is an excellent result though, I am sure, they were both hoping to do just a little bit better.
Tom Donaldson finished 4th and comfortably won the U1900 rating prize – his only complaint might be that he was actually eligible for the U1900 prize. Joel Rufin had a great result, finishing 6th and winning the U1750 rating prize, though consistent rating prizewinner, Nedeljko Tomic, was close behind him. Gary Donaldson won the U1500 rating prize and Sanjay Mukhedkar belied his lack of a rating by scoring 6 points and winning the U1000 + Unrated prize.
