2010 WA Open

1st & 2nd and 8th & 9th of May 2010

This year’s WA Open was held at Legacy House – one of the last tournaments that we will be holding there. I was the DOP. The tournament was played in good spirit, though people taking half point byes and withdrawing during the tournament did cause some confusion.

There were 24 players, just one more than last year. Much like last year, most of the state’s top players were unable to compete, with only two players rated over 1900. Despite this, the tournament was an enjoyable and closely fought affair. However, with another ten players, it would have been much better.

Those two highest rated players did not help their chances by throwing points away: Stephanus Kurniawan lost to the mobile phone gambit (one of three people to do so during the tournament) and I forgot to make a move in an easily winning endgame. Of those who had their phone ring, Robert Leeson was the most unlucky as it was the turning OFF of his phone that made the ringing noise.

Despite this, no credit can be taken away from David Ellis who scored 6 points, with no losses, having played almost all of his main rivals. His victory was deservedly sealed with a win in the last round against Stephanus. The three equal second placegetters (Derek Elkington, Dave Dempster and Eddy Seah) would all be satisfied with their good results.

Each of the rating group winners (Gordon Dunlop, Alex Janceski, Behrouz Ghorbanian and George Carolin-Unkovich) had good results, though Alex is probably unhappy that he lost his last two games.

The Top Junior prize was a bit of a farce. There were only 3 juniors entered, George won a higher prize and both Ryan Sam and David Stebbins had to withdraw because of prior commitments.

The three WA Closed Championship qualifying places will be allocated in the following order: 1. David Ellis, 2. Derek Elkington, 3.Eddy Seah 4. Haydn Barber, 5.Gordon Dunlop. Dave Dempster is already qualified via the 2009 Qualifying tournament.
