The Maccabi Grand Prix tournament was organized by Steven Pearson and everyone else at the Maccabi Chess Club. They did a good job and I would like to thank them for their efforts, and also the Maccabi Club for providing the venue. This tournament has become a regular feature on the WA Chess Calendar. The CAWA would love to see more tournaments organized by Chess Clubs around Perth.
We had a total of 37 entries in the four Grand Prix tournament, which is about normal. Jack South looked after the players on the floor, leaving me to remain anchored behind my computer – which is how I like it. We had the usual amount of assistance from parents, which helped a lot. All in all, it ran very smoothly.
The Under 18 Division has been dominated all year by Thomas Pinnock and William Williams. This time, William won their critical game, winning the tournament with a perfect score, and leaving himself with a chance of winning the overall Under 18 Grand Prix at the end of the year.
The Under 14 Division has been a very close affair all year, with two tournaments ending in a four-way tie for first, and one was even a five-way tie!! They have been costing the CAWA a fortune. Anyway, Daniel D’Angelo won this one by a point and has put himself into a good position in the Under 14 Grand Prix.
Dhruv Raj Bhardwaj and Nicholas Pizzino tied for first in the Under 12 tournament, both losing one game. Both of these players, along with third placed Davis Kim, have missed tournaments early in the year but are still making an impact in the Grand Prix. Sean Xiong did not have his best result, but still has a very handy lead in the Grand Prix.
Amul Dharmapuri won the Under 10 tournament, winning all of his games, putting himself in a good position to win the overall Grand Prix in the process. Ignatius Yap finished second and, although he still has the most points in the Grand Prix, it looks like he will have to win the last two tournaments to have a chance of winning it, since only his best six results will count. James Kim finished third and now looks like having to settle for third place in the Grand Prix.
