2011 Spring Lightning Tournament


The 2011 WA Spring Lightning Tournament was played at the Moresby Street Centre, Kensington on the 20th of November.

This new event only attracted 24 entries, which is down a few on the WA Lightning Championship. However, this is quite understandable as it does have the status of a WA Championship and was run close to the exam period for our students. When the Rapid Grand Prix (if?) becomes more established then I am sure that the numbers will pick up.

The playing strength of the tournament was quite solid, boosted by the arrival of two overseas players (Patrick Scharrer ELO 2280 and Ihsan Ferozkohi ELO 2100), and the annual return from Uni studies of Marc Vlietstra.

As the tournament unfolded, it seemed that Tristan Boyd, Yita Choong and Tom Donaldson were trying to draw with each other, and beat everyone else. And so it proved, until the last round when Joel Rufin stepped up and defeated Yita. This game cost Yita a share of first, and also first place in the Rapid Grand Prix which, barring miscalculations, now goes to Tom Donaldson.

In the final analysis, Tom Donaldson and Tristan Boyd shared first place.

Joel Rufin often goes well in this type of event and this was no exception. We did not seem to have any disputes, for which I am grateful. I would also like to thank Gordon Dunlop for sorting out which rules we were going to use.
