We had 36 competitors in the Junior Grand Prix tournament at All Saints College. There were a number of regulars absent from this tournament, but this was compensated for by a number of newcomers playing.
I would like to thank All Saints College for providing the venue, Ann Strautins for organising the All Saints end of things, and assisting throughout the day, Louise Bosnyak for helping with the pairings and results, and the small army of volunteers who helped move the mountain of equipment back and forward from my car.
The Under 18 only had 6 players, and 5 of those came from All Saints! Adam Kelly clearly won this division with a perfect score. Because they finished quite early, The Under 18s also played a Lightning tournament which, again, was won by Adam Kelly.
Sean Xiong is playing in the Under 14 division, though being eligible for the Under 12s – much to the relief of a couple of my students. However, this has not stopped him winning tournaments – he won this one with a perfect score, and is already building a handy lead in the Under 14 Grand Prix. Patrick Gong continued his good form from the Ballajura Novice and shared second place with Dhruv Bhardwaj.
The Under 12 division was a battle between the usual suspects. Ignatius Yap won the critical game against Sri Krishna (Amul) Dharmapuri and carried that advantage through to victory. Ignatius won last year’s Under 10 tournament at All Saints – maybe this is a lucky venue for him? Aayush Bhardwaj finished very close, drawing with Ignatius but losing to Sri Krishna. Matthew Ashworth seemed to be finding some long lost form but losses to Sri Krishna and Aayush in the last two rounds ruined it a little bit.
Aimos Yong and Victor Sun dominated the Under 10 division but Aimos won their individual game and won the tournament with a perfect score. Last year, Aimos missed the first 7 tournaments and still made the Top 10 of the Grand Prix! So far this year, he has only missed the first 3 tournaments. If he can play in all of the remaining tournaments, he has a chance of catching Victor by the end of the year. Third place went to Kundan Dharmapuri, just turned 6! Kundan is making tremendous progress and could be a star in the making. Incredibly, he has another 4 years in the Under 10s, if he wants to keep playing in that division.
