2012 Valentines Day Lightning Tournament

Twenty one Chess players gathered at the Moresby Street Hall for some friendly, but competitive, games of Lightning on Sunday 12th of February before Valentine’s Day.

Basically, it all ran very smoothly. We had one disputed result, but no serious arguments. I would like to thank Gordon Dunlop for helping me out with the DOP duties.

Because my printer chose to run out of toner at a most inopportune time, we were unable to print off pairings, results, etc. This was a bit awkward, but we just operated directly from the laptop screen, which seemed to be OK.

Thomas Donaldson won his first 5 games, including one against Yita Choong in round 5, and seemed in a good position to win the event. However, a loss to a resurgent Michael Horstmann in round 10 allowed Yita to catch up and share first place with Tom.

Michael only had 4 points from 7 rounds, and seemed to be struggling. However, 3 wins in a row saw him in a position to take third place by beating George Carolin-Unkovich – which he managed to achieve. George had another nice result, drawing with both Tom and Yita with only the loss to Michael in the last round seeing him miss out on third place.

Dylan Gough did pretty well for someone who has been away from competitive Chess for a long time. Amul Dharmapuri (look for him under his given name Sri Krishna Kousel Dharmapuri from now on) also had an excellent result, considering his lack of experience.
