2013 State Junior Championships

Played at Mount Lawley Senior High School on 30 April & 01, 02 & 03 May

These events were held at the Mount Lawley High School in the second week of the school holidays. This caused a number of players to be unavailable - we are going to have to find a more suitable time to hold this important tournament next year.

The low number of entries was especially evident with the girls - only 2 took part, both in the U12 division.

Other than that, the event ran fairly smoothly.

Under 16/18

With only 5 entries, these two divisions were combined again. Thomas Pinnock was unable to try and defend his title because of University commitments. With a solid field, we were looking for a close tournament.

However, George Carolin-Unkovich defeated two of his main rivals, Patrick Gong and Adam Kelly early on, and was going like a winner until his surprising loss to Daniel D'Angelo. This left George and Dhruv Bhardwaj playing for the title in the last round. George prevailed and is the 2013 WA Junior Champion. As such, he has secured a place in the WA Closed Championship, starting in July.

Patrick, Adam and Dhruv all tied for second.

Under 14

Because Patrick Gong had a bye in the last round of the Under 16 + 18, he was able to triple up and play in the Under 14 as well, so we were expecting a close contest between Patrick, Ignatius Yap and Sri Krishna Dharmapuri. However, Ignatius played very well throughout and won every game to finish a convincing winner. Patrick finished second, meaning that he finished second in the U18, U16 and U14 divisions!

The tournament was disrupted somewhat because two players, Jordan Berry and Andrey Lugovskoy, were sick on the second day of play. Jordan was also disadvantaged in that he was isolated from the rest of the players because the lift was broken and he was unable to get upstairs in his wheelchair.

Under 12

All of the five boys in the Under 12 division were in the running until round 6, when Sri Krishna Dharmapuri defeated Sean Sutton to guarantee victory - since he had the bye in the last round. Sri Krishna played well throughout, losing just one game to Kendrick Lai. Despite this, the final result was still very close with Andrey Lugovskoy and Aayush Bhardwaj coming equal second, just a half point behind. They both lost to the new Champion and drew with each other.

Despite having somewhat limited tournament experience, Kendrick Lai put in a promising performance, with his victory over the winner a highlight. Kendrick could have played in the Under 10 division, but he thought that would be too easy. I am sure that Sean Sutton will be disappointed with his result - I am also sure that he will bounce back soon.

The two girls ended up playing in the last round - I swear this was pure coincidence. Anusha Ambati won the game and is the new WA Under 12 Girls Champion. Maia Harlap was playing her first tournament, but showed some promise. She had a number of reasonable positions, but just lacked the experience to make the most of them.

Under 10

The Under 10 division is becoming notorious for producing multiple ties - 4 times in the last 6 years! This year, we had a 3 way tie between Kundan Dharmapuri, Djimon Jayasundera and Christopher McDowall. Between themselves, they each had a win and a loss, and they defeated everyone else.

The next day, we had a double round robin playoff to decide the new Champion. Christopher was completely out of sorts in the playoff and lost every game. This should not detract too much from his excellent performance overall. Djimon and Kundan traded wins and ended up still tied. This means that they are both co-champions in the Under 10 division.

Sage Allen was clearly the best of the other players.

Because of the low numbers, I decided that we only needed one DOP, but I want to thank Jack South and Dennis Holland for helping me get started, and Jack for helping us pack up at the end. Those stairs might have been the end of me otherwise.

Report by Haydn Barber, DOP.
