2017 Secondary Students' Championship
Played at Leeming Primary School on the 11th & 12th of April.

The 2017 Secondary Students' Championship attracted a strong field of 40 players from 13 Schools, with many of WA's top young players taking part. A special mention must go to Leeming Senior High School, which was represented by a huge contingent of 14 players. The tournament was won by FM Patrick Gong (Chisholm Catholic College), who dominated from the start to win with a perfect score of 6/6. His closest rivals were Ignatius Yap (Kennedy Baptist College) and Safiyya Aljunied (Willetton Senior High School) who both finished on 5/6. Given a choice of prizes because of a high tiebreak, Safiyya took home 1st in the Under 16 division, allowing Ignatius to claim 2nd place in the Under 18s. Other notable performances were that of Ramudu Rathnayake (Australind Senior High School) who scored 4/6 to win 1st for the Under 14 division, and Victor Sun (Perth Modern School) who finished outright 4th with 4.5/6. The Secondary Schools Trophy was convincingly won by Leeming Senior High School, with a huge score which nearly doubled that of the 2nd placed Willetton Senior High School. Chisholm Catholic College came from behind in round 6 to snatch 3rd place. Despite some issues with noise in the playing hall, there were still relatively few disputes and the games were all played in good spirit. I would like to thank all of the players for graciously accepting some of the tough decisions that were made by myself as DOP, and for their participation in a successful tournament!
