2018 Albany Junior Chess Championships
The 2018 Albany Junior Chess Championships were held on Sunday 30th September at Frost Park Hall, Mount Barker. The event attracted 20 players from Mount Barker and the surrounding area, including Albany, Torbay and Kendenup.
At the top of the tournament, there was a tie for first place between Brendan Squire and Stacey Smith, both scoring 6/7. They had a 15min playoff for the title with Brendan emerging victorious.
Congratulations to Brendan Squire, the 2018 Albany Junior Chess Champion!
The surprise of the tournament was nine-year-old Ayden Tempany who finished outright third with 5.5/7. Consequently, he was awarded the title of Albany Under 15 Chess Champion.
The title of Albany Under 12 Chess Champion was very deservedly awarded to Maxwell Wright with a score of 4.5/7, who also tied for fourth overall.
The title of Albany Under 9 Chess Champion was awarded to Logan Van Vliet with 2/7. Getting two wins in a very tough field of mostly older players was a great achievement.
A big thank you goes to Mount Barker Community College for providing us with the venue and Douglas Klaffer in particular, who spent an enormous amount of time and effort behind the scenes making this event possible.
