On Sunday 25 November, Carmel Primary School hosted the first Carmel Open Junior Chess Tournament. The tournament was held in the Sylvia and Harry Hoffman Hall and included 40 players. There were two separate groups: 24 contestants in the under 10s group and another 16 in the combined under 14s/under 18s group.|
There was a tie for first in the under 10 division between Daniel Levin and Timothy Kaempf, both scoring 6/7. After an intense Blitz playoff, Daniel came out the champion. Aarnav Gupta was outright third with a score of 5.5/7.
The Under 14/18 Division was won by Rebo Fu with a score of 6.5/7. Second place overall went to Celine Ong with 6/7, who took the Under 14 prize. In third place was Jamie Laubbacher with 4.5/7.
Maccabi WA, for organising and donating all the trophies and merit awards.
Doctor Asher Freilich, for donating $200 to be given out in cash prizes.
Shai Levin, who put in countless hours behind the scenes ensuring this event would be a success.
The countless number of people who donated prizes for the raffle held at the end of the event.
