2019 Harris/Edwardes Trophy

The 2019 Harris Interclub Competition was held at Southern Suburbs Chess Club (Leeming Primary School) on Sundays 28th July and 4th August. The competition was very successful with 8 teams competing (38 players in total) -- 4 teams from Southern Suburbs Chess Club, 2 teams from Perth Chess Club, and 2 teams from UWA Chess Association. I am hopeful that future years will see renewed participation from Metropolitan Chess Club and Kingsley Junior Chess Club, as well as new teams from other clubs.

Division A (Open)

Division A (Open) was won by Southern Suburbs Chess Club. Congratulations to the winning team members: FM Stephanus Kurniawan, FM Tristan Boyd, Tim Hare, Andrew Hardegen (captain), and WFM Kathryn Hardegen. With this victory, Southern Suburbs Chess Club becomes the first club to win five successive Harris Interclub Competitions.

The final standings were as follows:

Southern Suburbs A1: 13.0/16
Southern Suburbs A2: 7.0/16
UWA A: 4.0/16

Division B (all players rated below 1900 ACF)

Division B was won by Southern Suburbs Chess Club. Congratulations to the winning team members: Ben Dagza, Ian McAteer (captain), Andrey Lugovskoy, Voon Choon Leong, Tjermin Gunawan and Oscar Gao. This ended up being a very closely contested division: Southern Suburbs won both matches in the opening week, which meant that Perth would need to win both of the final two matches. Perth were able to do so, fighting back strongly in the second week, however Perth's margins of victory in these matches were not quite sufficient to offset Southern Suburbs' early lead in game points.

The final standings were as follows:

Southern Suburbs B: 2 matches won, 8.5 game points
Perth B: 2 matches won, 7.5 game points

Division C (all players rated below 1500 ACF)

Division C was won by Perth Chess Club. Congratulations to the winning team members: Victor Markou, Tom Browning, Jamie Laubbacher and Ernest Boswarva (captain). At the half-way point, Perth and UWA had led jointly, with Southern Suburbs narrowly behind. Southern Suburbs presented a genuine challenge on the final day, but Perth continued to score consistently well and were able to defend their lead.

The final standings were as follows:

Perth C: 10.5/16
Southern Suburbs C: 9.0/16
UWA C: 4.5/16

Trophies for this year's Harris Interclub Competition will be presented at the annual CAWA Presentations which, this year, will be held on Sunday 15th December.

Congratulations to the winning teams from Southern Suburbs Chess Club and Perth Chess Club, and to all participants. Thank you to Marcus Simonds and Alan Wolstencroft for their invaluable help, and to all participants who arrived early and stayed late on each day to help set everything up and pack everything away. The players' conduct and patience ensured that the competition was able to run smoothly without incident. Well done to the many club members and team captains who organised teams for this year's competition.
