2011 Kingsley Open


The first Grand Prix event for 2011 - the Kingsley Open (6 rounds) was played over the weekend on 19 & 20 of February at the Moresby Street Centre in Kensington.

The turnout for the Kingsley Open was about average, the two under-represented groups were the over 1900’s (only 1 player) and the 1300 – 1600’s (only 2 players). I don’t know whether there are any special reasons for this but we are considering the possibility of holding an U1600 tournament, to see if that draws a significant number of entries. Anyway, at present, we are getting enough entries to continue running these weekenders.

Yita Choong defended his top ranking by just winning the event, just conceding two draws, and had some interesting games along the way. Gordon Dunlop had a good result, finishing in clear second place.

David Ellis and Nedeljko Tomic were equal first with Yita going into the last round, but both went down to the top two, and had to settle for equal third with Tom Donaldson and Aston Taminsjah (who picked up another nice result after a shaking off a slow start).

Other players to come under notice were: John Summerfield, Aleksa Petanovic and Zachary Vowles.
