The 2011 South West Open was not played as the 2011 Bridgetown Chess Championship was being held during that time as part of the '2011 Winter in the Blackwood' Festival. A fun, chess-filled weekend was enjoyed by all participants. Many remarked that it was the most chess in the shortest time they had played in ages. The clocks for the seniors were set at 30 minutes plus 30 seconds per move, but the players raced through their games with most games over within 30 minutes! This left plenty of time for friendly games, and the hall was filled with the happy sounds of convivial jousting over the boards. All players agreed that they would be in it again next year, but many suggested that perhaps the whole competition should be done on one day. And maybe next year the format will be a 'Rapid Play' tournament. The Open Section was won by Steven Wood with Darren Powel and Clive Smith tied for second place. They agreed to play a tie breaking game which Darren won. The Junior section was won by Avijoy Roy Choudhury, with James Moyes 2nd and Morio Freeman 3rd.
