The 2016 School Chess League (SCL) finals were played on Saturday 30th July and Sunday 31st July. This finals weekend was the culmination of four months of fiercely contested zonal matches between 8 primary and 14 secondary school teams consisting of four students each, with the top 2 finishing schools from each zone's Premier Division winning the right to contest the finals. 4 schools qualified in each of the Primary and Secondary leagues, and so both finals were run as a double round robin.

The winners in each final would be awarded the titles of Primary and Secondary SCL Champions and qualify to represent WA at the 2016 Australian Schools' Teams Championships.

In the Primary league finals, Kyilla Primary School, Mount Lawley Primary School, Queen of Apostles School and Regent College qualified. After day one, Mount Lawley Primary School seemed to be firmly in control, having scored wins over each of the other three schools. However, a loss in Round 5 to Kyilla Primary School set up a crucial final round encounter with Regent College, who had won all of their other matches and were tied with Mount Lawley Primary School on match points. Regent College then scored a decisive 3-1 win to claim 1st place with 10/12 match points, with Mount Lawley Primary School finishing in 2nd place with 8/12.

The Secondary league finals were contested by All Saints' College, Scotch College, St Norbert College and Wesley College. Unfortunately, due to some miscommunication, St Norbert's team were informed at the last minute about the finals and could only play with a full team for two rounds. However, they put in a valiant effort in holding Wesley College to a 2-2 draw, with Wesley College comfortably winning their other two matches on Saturday. On Sunday, Scotch College staged a late comeback, beating All Saints' College and holding Wesley College to a draw. This meant that All Saints' College needed a final round win over Wesley College to force a playoff for first, but Wesley College finished strongly with a 4-0 win to wrap up 1st place with 10/12, and Scotch College took 2nd place with 7/12.

As league coordinators, we would like to thank all of the school teams and team captains for supporting this interschool competition, and we hope to bring you an even bigger and better event in 2017.
