2023 SCL North Zone
On March 19th, the 2023 School Chess League, North Zonal was held at The Royal Park Hall, which received an overwhelming response this year. Our initial goal was to have 110 players, and we opened bookings on February 13th. However, all tickets were sold out on March 6th, leaving a waiting list of approximately 30 students. After discussions with the hall facility manager, we were able to increase the maximum number of players to 150 by adding 40 extra tickets, which allowed us to clear the waiting list. By Friday evening, all 150 tickets were sold out. However, on the day of the event, two players cancelled their attendance, leaving us with a final count of 148 players.
A total of 13 high schools and 22 primary schools participated in the event, and we would like to extend our congratulations to the winning schools!

The individual winners in the Seconday Division were Oscar Gao in first place with a perfect score of 7/7, followed by Eu Jin Khaw and Eamon Harris in second and third places respectively, with scores of 6/7 each. Celine Ong was the top girl winner in the Secondary Division with a score of 5/7.

First place: Oberthur Primary School, Second place: Caladenia Primary School, Third place: Carmel Primary School.
In the individual Primary Division, Angus Chen took first place with a perfect score of 7/7. Dominic Davoll and Leo Gong followed closely in second and third places respectively, with scores of 6/7 each. Additionally, four players had a score of 6/7, including Ryan Zamani and Yonatan Kitay. However, due to the tie-breaker, Ryan came in fourth place, while Yonatan came in fifth place on the list and both received merit awards. In addition merit awards for another 2 players with scores of 5.5/7 each were awarded to Eric Deng and Nithuli Liyanage.
Nithuli Liyanage was the top-performing primary girl, achieving a score of 5.5/7.
To the 20 volunteers who helped with various tasks during the event, and the parents who helped in setting up and packing up the venue, we are extremely grateful for your time and dedication. Your hard work and commitment were truly appreciated, and we couldn't have asked for a better team of volunteers. Your contributions have made a significant impact, and we hope to have you back for future events. We are honored to have such wonderful volunteers and parents in our community.

The Primary school tournament had 82 players from 24 different schools.
Several schools battled it out for the first three places. Some schools fielded less than 4 players and still managed a good result namely Scotch College, Harrisdale Primary School, Swan Christian College, Wesley College, Dianella Heights Primary School and the WA Russian school. With a full complement (4 players) I am sure these schools could have done better. Mount Lawley Primary School was unfortunate in that one of their key players had to retire after the first round which left them with three players, otherwise this school would definitely have ended higher up in the rankings.
In the end six teams (all with 4 or more players) battled it out for the top three places. Kingsway Christian College came 6th and Christchurch Grammar School 5th . Oberthur Primary School and Nedlands Primary School finished on the same number of points but Oberthur had a lower Buchholz score and had to settle for 4th place which meant Nedlands came third. Caladenia Primary School was in the running for the top spot but fell short by half a point and had to settle for 2nd place. The winners, by a whisker, were Carmel Primary School, a good improvement on their preceding result in the Northern Zonal.
Individual results were also close with Ashok Anish and Eric Deng, ending on 6.5 points. Anish took home the winner's trophy with a superior Buchholz score. Similarly vying for third place with 6 points were Nithuli Liyange and Dominic Davoll. Nithuli was given the third place on the basis of her better Buchholz score. This meant that Dominic had to settle for a Merit award along with Ezra Levine who was the only player on 5.5 points. Nithuli won the Best Girl's trophy.

There were 91 students from 21 schools, a significant increase in the number of players compared to previous SCL zonals. Perth Modern School, Shenton College and Trinity College fielded 13 or more players.
Harrisdale Senior High School came 8th, Duncraig Senior High School was 7th and Wesley College 6th. Five teams fought it out for the top spots. Shenton College had to settle for 5th place, Christchurch Grammar School 4th, and there was little separating the top three teams. Trinity College was 3rd with 20 points, Rossmoyne Senior High School was 2nd 20 points (but had a better Buchholz score) and Perth Modern School were 1st. (21.5 points).
With such a large number of players and only 7 rounds there was always the possibility that several of the best players would finish on the same number of points. This was the case in this tournament with 6 players finishing with 6 points out of 7, namely, Ashvin Balavignan, Mitchell Christianopoulos, Ilya Eimery, Eu Jin Khaw, Liam Raptis and Salish Manjire. In such a situation the tie break rules are used which involves comparing their Buchholz scores. This meant that Ashvin, Manjire and Mitchell had to settle for a Merit award, Ilya was third, Eu Jin second and Liam was first. In an ideal tournament more rounds would be scheduled to increase the chances of having an outright winner, but this event's prime purpose is to determine the best schools and not the best individuals. Elise Sova won the Best Girl's trophy.

The top four players from each of these teams won a trophy.
Once again the stars of this event were our wonderful group of volunteers, Scott (announcements and general organisation), Gareth (Primary School Arbiter), Jose (Arbiter), Kerry Aung (results and general organisation) Curt (Arbiter), Dr Brian (Primary School Arbiter), Karl (Arbiter),Carvin Kumar (Secondary School Arbiter), Dan (Arbiter), Rekha ( Registration and results), Myron, (Arbiter), Jessie Kong (registration),Tim Hare (CAWA property manager who despite HBF's Fun Runs best efforts managed to deliver all the equipment in a timely fashion), Rebo, (Arbiter, announcements and technical support), John Pimenov (technical support),Faith Tee (CAWA Junior Vice-President and general organisation and support). Thanks to many of the Trinity College students who showed great Esprit de Corps helping us to pack up all the equipment.
