2023 SCL North Zone
On March 19th, the 2023 School Chess League, North Zonal was held at The Royal Park Hall, which received an overwhelming response this year. Our initial goal was to have 110 players, and we opened bookings on February 13th. However, all tickets were sold out on March 6th, leaving a waiting list of approximately 30 students. After discussions with the hall facility manager, we were able to increase the maximum number of players to 150 by adding 40 extra tickets, which allowed us to clear the waiting list. By Friday evening, all 150 tickets were sold out. However, on the day of the event, two players cancelled their attendance, leaving us with a final count of 148 players.
A total of 13 high schools and 22 primary schools participated in the event, and we would like to extend our congratulations to the winning schools!

The individual winners in the Seconday Division were Oscar Gao in first place with a perfect score of 7/7, followed by Eu Jin Khaw and Eamon Harris in second and third places respectively, with scores of 6/7 each. Celine Ong was the top girl winner in the Secondary Division with a score of 5/7.

First place: Oberthur Primary School, Second place: Caladenia Primary School, Third place: Carmel Primary School.
In the individual Primary Division, Angus Chen took first place with a perfect score of 7/7. Dominic Davoll and Leo Gong followed closely in second and third places respectively, with scores of 6/7 each. Additionally, four players had a score of 6/7, including Ryan Zamani and Yonatan Kitay. However, due to the tie-breaker, Ryan came in fourth place, while Yonatan came in fifth place on the list and both received merit awards. In addition merit awards for another 2 players with scores of 5.5/7 each were awarded to Eric Deng and Nithuli Liyanage.
Nithuli Liyanage was the top-performing primary girl, achieving a score of 5.5/7.
To the 20 volunteers who helped with various tasks during the event, and the parents who helped in setting up and packing up the venue, we are extremely grateful for your time and dedication. Your hard work and commitment were truly appreciated, and we couldn't have asked for a better team of volunteers. Your contributions have made a significant impact, and we hope to have you back for future events. We are honored to have such wonderful volunteers and parents in our community.

The Primary school tournament had 82 players from 24 different schools.
Several schools battled it out for the first three places. Some schools fielded less than 4 players and still managed a good result namely Scotch College, Harrisdale Primary School, Swan Christian College, Wesley College, Dianella Heights Primary School and the WA Russian school. With a full complement (4 players) I am sure these schools could have done better. Mount Lawley Primary School was unfortunate in that one of their key players had to retire after the first round which left them with three players, otherwise this school would definitely have ended higher up in the rankings.
In the end six teams (all with 4 or more players) battled it out for the top three places. Kingsway Christian College came 6th and Christchurch Grammar School 5th . Oberthur Primary School and Nedlands Primary School finished on the same number of points but Oberthur had a lower Buchholz score and had to settle for 4th place which meant Nedlands came third. Caladenia Primary School was in the running for the top spot but fell short by half a point and had to settle for 2nd place. The winners, by a whisker, were Carmel Primary School, a good improvement on their preceding result in the Northern Zonal.
Individual results were also close with Ashok Anish and Eric Deng, ending on 6.5 points. Anish took home the winner's trophy with a superior Buchholz score. Similarly vying for third place with 6 points were Nithuli Liyange and Dominic Davoll. Nithuli was given the third place on the basis of her better Buchholz score. This meant that Dominic had to settle for a Merit award along with Ezra Levine who was the only player on 5.5 points. Nithuli won the Best Girl's trophy.

There were 91 students from 21 schools, a significant increase in the number of players compared to previous SCL zonals. Perth Modern School, Shenton College and Trinity College fielded 13 or more players.
Harrisdale Senior High School came 8th, Duncraig Senior High School was 7th and Wesley College 6th. Five teams fought it out for the top spots. Shenton College had to settle for 5th place, Christchurch Grammar School 4th, and there was little separating the top three teams. Trinity College was 3rd with 20 points, Rossmoyne Senior High School was 2nd 20 points (but had a better Buchholz score) and Perth Modern School were 1st. (21.5 points).
With such a large number of players and only 7 rounds there was always the possibility that several of the best players would finish on the same number of points. This was the case in this tournament with 6 players finishing with 6 points out of 7, namely, Ashvin Balavignan, Mitchell Christianopoulos, Ilya Eimery, Eu Jin Khaw, Liam Raptis and Salish Manjire. In such a situation the tie break rules are used which involves comparing their Buchholz scores. This meant that Ashvin, Manjire and Mitchell had to settle for a Merit award, Ilya was third, Eu Jin second and Liam was first. In an ideal tournament more rounds would be scheduled to increase the chances of having an outright winner, but this event's prime purpose is to determine the best schools and not the best individuals. Elise Sova won the Best Girl's trophy.

2023 SCL South Zone
There was a good turnout for the Schools Chess League Southern Zonal held at Corpus Christi College on Sunday, 18th June with a total of 148 players from 42 schools. The attendance figure would have been higher but prior to the start of the tournament we had 22 withdrawals mainly due to the flu that is prevalent in Perth at the moment.

The Primary school tournament had 85 players from 23 different schools.
There were several schools in the running for the top three places. 10th with 11.5 points was Wesley College, 9th with 14 points was Scotch College, 8th with 16 points was the Russian School, 7th with 16.5 was Mount Lawley Primary School and 6th with 16.5 points a superior Buchholz score) was Harrisdale Primary School. All these schools put in a good performance but this was a fiercely contested competition with a lot of strong players. Contesting the top three positions were five schools, Caladenia Primary School, Carmel Primary School, Christ Church Grammar School, Nedlands Primary School and Oberthur Primary School. Christchurch Grammar had to settle for 5th place with 18.5 points and Nedlands for 4th place with the same points score as Christ Church but a superior Buchholz score. Going into the last round Caladenia were equal first but faltered in the last round and had to settle for 3rd place with 19.5 points. Carmel played consistently throughout the tournament and their strong team performance meant they came second with 21 points. By a whisker Oberthur were the winners with 21.5 points.
Individual results were also very close. Going into the last round Angus Chen and Yuqi Huang were on 5.5, Senudi De Vas, Leo Gong, Ezra Levine and Ryan Zamani were all on five. Senudi drew with Ayun Batahena and had to settle for the Best Girl trophy and a Merit Trophy. Leo beat Sebastian Walker to claim the second prize, Ezra beat Ryan to come third and Yuqi lost to Angus. This meant Yuqi to be content with a Merit Trophy and Angus was 1st with 6.5 points. 17 merit trophies were awarded to the following players:- Yuqi Huang, Eu Ming Khaw, Senudi De Vas, Ayun Batahena, Ryan Zamani, Nithuli Liyange, Avan Chung, Uudamkhishig Togtmol, Sergi Chernyshenko, Yonatan Kitay, Kaviru Perera, Daniel Ye, Sebastian Walker, Darren Kuzmin, Marcus Van Berg, Benjie Snel and William Lough.

There were 63 students from 16 schools.
Seven teams had four or more players and not surprisingly they were the ones competing for the top places. Harrisdale Senior High School came 7th, and Christ Church Grammar School was 6th. This left five schools in the running for the top three places. They were Perth Modern School, Shenton College, Rossmoyne Senior High School, Trinity College and Willetton Senior High School. Trinity College had to settle for 5th place with 17.5 points. It was neck and neck between Rossmoyne and Shenton and they both finished with 19 points. However, Shenton had the better Buchholz score so took the 3rd place and Rossmoyne had to settle for 4th place. It was also neck and neck between Perth Modern and Willetton. Going into the last round Willetton were half a point ahead and their top four players finished with the same score as top four in Perth Modern in the last round. This meant that Perth Modern had to settle for 2nd place and Willetton won by a whisker (0.5 points) to come first. A terrific result for Willetton Senior High School a relative newcomer to the Schools Chess League.
From an individual view point there were a lot of closely contested games. Going into the last round Alex Pimenov was leading with 5.5 points and there were six players on 5 points, Adam El-Fayoumi, Barath Harirajesh, Harmoniche Deng, Anthony Milner, Anthony Nguyen and Eddie Wong. Alex drew with Anthony Milner, Barath lost to Eddie, Anthony Nguyen beat Adam and Harmoniche beat Seth Chong. This meant that four players finished on 6 points and the Buchholz score came into play to decide the first three places. Eddie was third, Alex was second and Harmoniche was the winner. Anthony Nguyen had to settle for a Merit award. In all 10 Merit trophies were awarded to the following:- Anthony Nguyen, Anthony Milner, Adam El-Fayoumi, Ashvin Balavignan, Barath Harirajesh, Yonal De Vas, Daryoush Rafiei Darani, Eu Jin Khaw, Cooper Scarff and Abhinav Verma. No girls competed.

2023 SCL West Zone
The CAWA SCL Western Zonal was played at Nedlands Primary School on Sunday 13th August. The event was a sell out with 118 participants. Next year we will aim to increase the capacity to 160 or more.

2023 SCL Finals
The finals of the School Chess League were held on Monday, September 4th at Perth Modern School. Fourteen schools, six primary and nine secondary, competed for the chance to represent Western Australia in the 2023 National School Finals. Both divisions were run in a team round-robin format. Players were ranked by approximate playing strength, and each school's board 1 played against every other school's board 1, and so on.
Primary Division
In the primary division, Oberthur Primary entered the finals as the heavy favourite with a very solid lineup led by Angus Chen. The team's average rating was 250 points higher than the second-highest rated Caladenia.

No major surprises occurred during the tournament - Oberthur PS outplayed the opposition convincingly and deservedly claimed first place and the State Champion title!
The only unexpected result for the new champions was in the match against Christchurch, where they had to settle for a draw due to a couple of serious mistakes by Oberthur players.
The placement of the silver and bronze medals was determined by tiebreaks, as three schools - Caladenia PS, Scotch College, and Nedlands PS - finished with the same score of 2.5 points. Based on the number of individual games won, Caladenia PS claimed second place, and Scotch College finished third:

Secondary Division
In the Secondary Division, the biggest favorite was Rossmoyne SHS, the current WA School Chess Champion. Half of their lineup had just returned from representing Australia at the World U16 Chess Olympiad, making the Rossmoyne team a formidable opponent. The only other solid contender for the title was traditionally strong Perth Modern, which had won the SCL State Finals many times before.

After eight rounds of play, no surprises occurred. Both Rossmoyne and Perth Modern won all of their matches and, with 7/7 points, went into the last round facing each other. Although Perth Modern players put up a solid defense, they were no match for Rossmoyne's power, who won 3:1 and became the State Champion for the second year in a row!
An interesting development occurred in the fight for the third place. Due to the tournament situation and possible tiebreaks, two teams could have claimed bronze medals - Trinity College and Christchurch Grammar. Trinity was having a BYE in the last round and couldn't impact the situation. On the other hand, Christchurch was facing Kingsway Christian College and needed a win with a 3:1 score or more. The match came down to the game on the first board between Celine Ong playing white and Oscar Gao playing black. In the endgame, Celine had a queen versus one rook pawn on the 2nd rank, which was defended by the king for Oscar. The white king was too far to help the Queen checkmate the opponent. Although that position could have been played for three results, unfortunately, Celine was low on time and allowed the flag fall. This ended the match with 3:1 for Christchurch and made them the Bronze medalists!

2023 SCL Girls Finals
The 2023 School Chess League Girls final was played on Sunday 24th September at the Royal Park Hall in West Perth.
26 young ladies from 14 different schools around Perth (10 Primary and 4 Secondary) competed in a combined tournament Swiss over 7 rounds.
Despite to the absence of one child and the tardiness of another, the tournament was still able to commence on time and thanks to some early preparation and some good assistance from scorers and arbiters, was able to run smoothly throughout the day.
Just a round seven student slip-up threatened to derail an otherwise great day, but this too was avoided and the tournament was completed without major drama.

The results from the tournament were as follows:
Top Secondary Schools
2nd Place went to Perth Modern, represented by sole participant Paula Gruber who played quite well throughout the day and finished on a score of 5 out of 7.
The winning secondary school was Carine Senior High School, also represented by one student Niki Hashemitaba, who was able to beat Gruber in the first round, and finished on a score of 5.5 out of 7.
Well done to these two young ladies for playing great chess and for their professionalism throughout a gruelling afternoon.
Note: It was decided at a meeting prior to the tournament that due to low numbers, the school title of WA Secondary Girls Champion would not be awarded this year.
Top Primary Schools
With a total of ten schools represented, this competition was hotly contested but only for second and third place as first place led from the outset and were never caught.
In 3rd place Caladenia won a count-back against an equally scored Subiaco (7 points), to receive a place on the podium. Yet, despite this, only half a point ahead of them were second (2nd) (7.5 points) placed PLC who had a good day all round.
With double the amount of players to the other two place-getters, Nedlands Primary School were the runaway winners with a great score of 14.5.
Well done to these three schools.
